For the first time in a tablet, Tab S uses the same screen technology in Samsung’s phones – Super AMOLED – so black lines aren’t lit from behind, unlike on the LCD panels of iPads.
Text is extraordinarily crisp, and the colours are so bright they make Skittles look understated.
My beloved iPad Mini suddenly looks dreary next to the Tab S.
There is also a point to it: the crisp text means you can read books, magazines and documents without feeling like you’ve stuck a branding iron into your frontal lobe.
The Tab S ‘magazine screen’ format brings up big windows showing email, and letting you edit office files, rather like a PC.
You can also pair the tablet with your home PC and work on documents on screen, for a bit of covert sofa drudgery in your ‘time off’.
The tablet is 6.6mm thin (thinner than the iPad Air) and has a pleasingly posh metallic finish, in contrast to previous Samsung tablets, which often felt like bath toys.
For now, the Tab S is in a field of its own. It’s easily the best Android tablet yet.
