SEBUAH pesawat jet ´Generasi Mendatang´ dapat mengangkut penumpang dari London ke New York hanya dalam waktu 20 menit, menurut pembuatnya.
Disainer Kanada Charles Bombardier mengklaim pesawat konsepnya, disebut antipoda, mampu terbang 10 kali lebih cepat dari Concorde.
Superjet ini mengangkut 10 orang, menggunakan roket pendorong untuk naik hingga ketinggian 40.000 kaki dan mampu mengitari dunia dalam waktu kurang dari yang dibutuhkan untuk menonton pertandingan sepak bola.
Pesawat yang dijuluki ´mesin supersonik combuston ramjet´ akan menerbangkan pesawat hingga kecepatan 24 Mach, yang berarti 21 kali kecepatan suara.
Sebuah Boeing 747 normal kecepatan tertingginya 570 mil (917 km) per jam, namun antipoda mampu mencapai 16.000 (25.749) km per jam.
Hal itu lantaran pemanfaatan teknologi futuristik yang disebut Long Penetration Mode, yang bekerja dengan menggunakan aerodinamika cerdas dan baru-baru ini diuji oleh Badan Antariksa AS (NASA).
Aliran udara akan disalurkan melalui nozzle di hidung pesawat, untuk menghasilkan tenaga jet.
Teknik ini akan menghentikannya dari mengalami masalah yang sama pada Concorde, yang terkendala sonic boom keras di atas tanah dan panas meningkat karena gesekan udara pada kecepatan tinggi.
Inilah kedua kalinya ´Bombardier´ merancang pesawat super cepat, setelah sebelumnya mengumumkan disain yang disebut Skeemr.
Mr Bombardier mengatakan kepada BBC: "Gagasan terbang dari New York ke London, katakanlah 20 menit - itulah yang saya pikir menjadi keinginan banyak orang."
"Inilah idaman banyak orang - sistem transportasi yang bisa membawa Anda dari satu tempat ke tempat lain di planet."
Namun kita tidak akan terbang melintasi Atlantik dalam 20 menit waktu dekat ini karena desain ini hanya sebuah konsep.
Bombardier menambahkan: "Saya ingin membantu mendapatkan dana untuk melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut, dan jadi saya mencoba untuk mendorong seluruh hal ke depan."
"Saya tahu bahwa itu tidak akan menyebabkan pesawat yang tepat, tetapi mungkin membantu untuk mengembangkan teknologi baru dan proses baru. Jika tidak, maka saya senang bahwa saya melakukan sesuatu untuk membantu masyarakat."
Pesawat penumpang tercepat di dunia saat ini adalah Air Force One.
Jet pribadi Presiden dapat mencapai kecepatan 594 mil (955 km) per jam dan mampu mengisi bahan bakar di udara dan terbang tanpa batas waktu sesuai kebutuhan.
Tidak mengherankan, kalau harganya tidak murah, biaya operasional sekitar Rp3,2 miliar per jam ketika berada di udara.
Baru saja kemarin terungkap bahwa pesawat itu membutuhkan perubahan mendesak, tak lama setelah Donald Trump terpilih sebagai Presiden AS.
Donald juga akan mendapatkan pesawat kedua karena pesawat kepresidenan sudah tua seperti dilansir The Sun.
A NEXT-GENERATION jet could take passengers from London to New York in just 20 minutes, according to its creator.
Canadian designer Charles Bombardier claims his concept plane, called the Antipode, could be ten times faster than Concorde.
It would carry ten people, using rocket boosters to climb to 40,000 feet and could zoom round the globe in less time than it takes to watch a game of football.
A ‘supersonic combuston ramjet engine’ would then bring the plane up to speeds of Mach 24, which is 21 times the speed of sound.
A normal Boeing 747 has a top speed of 570 miles an hour, but the Antipode would be capable of reaching a whopping 16,000 mph.
It could do this using a futuristic technology called Long Penetration Mode, which works by using clever aerodynamics and was recently tested by NASA.
Some air would be channelled through a nozzle in the nose, to produce a counter-flowing jet of air.
The technique would stop it from having similar problems to Concorde, which suffered from a loud sonic boom over land and a massive heat build-up due to friction at high speeds.
It’s Bombardier’s second attempt at designing a super-fast aircraft, after previously publishing a design called the Skreemr.
Mr Bombardier told the BBC: “The idea of going from New York to London in, say 20 minutes – that’s what I think really grabbed people.
“It’s always something that people would like – a transportation system that could take you from one place on the planet to the other side.”
But we won’t be jetting across the Atlantic in 20 minutes any time soon as the design is just a concept.
Bombardier added: “I wanted to help get funding to do more research, and so I tried to push the whole thing forward.
“I know that it’s not going to lead to the exact aircraft at the end, but it might help to develop new technologies and new processes. If it does, then that I’m happy that I did something to help society.”
The fastest passenger plane in the world at the moment is Air Force One.
The President’s private jet can reach speeds of 594 mph and is able to refuel midair and stay in the air indefinitely if necessary.
Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t come cheap, costing £160,000 per hour when it’s in the air.
Just yesterday it was revealed that the plane needs an urgent makeover, just in time for President-elect Donald Trump.
The Donald is also going to get a second plane over fears it is simply too outdated.
