Jakarta (B2B) - Badan Pangan dan Pertanian PBB (FAO) mengapresiasi upaya-upaya yang dilakukan Indonesia dalam mewujudkan swasembada beras pada 2016 melalui program nasional Upaya Khusus Padi, Jagung, dan Kedelai (Upsus Pajale), menurut Asisten Direktur Jenderal FAO untuk Asia dan Pasifik Kundhavi Kadiresan saat bertemu Menteri Pertanian RI Andi Amran Sulaiman di Jakarta pada Minggu (12/3).

"FAO menghargai keberhasilan Indonesia dalam swasembada beras pada tahun 2016. Capaian ini merupakan hasil dari investasi pemerintah khususnya Kementerian Pertanian yang RI sebagian besar digunakan untuk membangun infrastruktur. Langkah selanjutnya adalah membangun sektor pertanian yang berdaya saing dan mendorong diversifikasi pertanian untuk meningkatkan kehidupan petani dan memperbaiki gizi seluruh rakyat Indonesia," kata Kadiresan.

Dia menambahkan bahwa Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG-2) menargetkan zero hunger dan perbaikan gizi serta percepatan pertumbuhan sektor pertanian. Namun, upaya mencapai cita-cita tersebut menghadapi sejumlah tantangan termasuk kenaikan suhu bumi, cuaca ekstrim yang semakin sering terjadi, kekurangan air dan degradasi lahan yang sangat memengaruhi produktivitas pertanian.

Menurutnya, Badan Khusus PBB FAO bekerja sama dengan Kementerian Pertanian RI mendorong penerapan pendekatan ekosistem untuk membangun sektor pertanian yang lebih produktif, tangguh, dan sehat seperti kawasan pengembangan sistem mina-padi, pengendalian hama terpadu dengan pendekatan lanskap pada tanaman padi, dan pertanian konservasi untuk peningkatan produksi jagung.

"Selain itu, FAO telah bekerja sama dengan Indonesia dalam menangani flu burung, rabies dan ancaman pandemik lain dengan dukungan dari USAID dan lembaga-lembaga lain," kata Kundhavi.

Kepala Biro Humas dan Informasi Publik Kementan, Agung Hendriadi mengatakan dalam pertemuan tersebut, Mentan Amran Sulaiman menjelaskan tentang keberhasilan Indonesia dalam program ketahanan pangan, dan menyatakan puas atas dukungan FAO pada Indonesia terhadap kerja sama antara Indonesia dan FAO.

"Mentan juga mengungkapkan bahwa pada 2016, Indonesia berhasil menghentikan impor beberapa komoditi strategis seperti beras medium/biasa, cabe segar, dan bawang merah untuk konsumsi; dan menurunkan impor jagung hingga 66,6%," kata Agung melalui pernyataan tertulis pada Minggu malam.

Jakarta (B2B) - UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) appreciates Indonesia’s efforts in reaching rice self-sufficiency in 2016 through the national UPSUS Program and extended FAO’s appreciation for those efforts, according to Assistant Director-General and FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, Kundhavi Kadiresan here on Sunday (March 12) after met with Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.

“FAO appreciates Indonesia’s achievements with respect to rice in 2016, resulting from major investment by the government, and the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry itself, largely in infrastructure. The next step is to build a competitive and diversified agricultural sector that promotes farmer livelihoods and improved nutrition for all Indonesians,”  Kadiresan said.

She added that the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG-2) targets zero hunger and much improved nutrition, while also accelerating agricultural growth.  Yet the achievement of these objectives is hampered by various factors, including higher temperatures, more frequent extreme weather conditions, water shortages, and land degradation, all of which seriously affect agricultural productivity. 

According to her, FAO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, works in close collaboration with the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry. Together they are promoting ecosystem approaches for a more resilient, nutritious, and productive agriculture, such as rice-fish farming, integrated pest management using a landscape approach in rice, and conservation agriculture in corn production.

"Additionally, FAO has been working with Indonesia in tackling avian influenza, rabies and other emerging pandemic threats with support from USAID and other donors," Kadiresan said.

The Head of Public Relations and Public Information of the ministry, Agung Hendriadi said Minister Sulaiman further explained Indonesia’s achievement in food security programmes and expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation between Indonesia and FAO.

"He also highlighted that in 2016, Indonesia managed to avoid imports of such strategic commodities as medium rice, fresh chilly, and shallots for consumption; and reduce the import of maize by up to 66,6 percent," Hendriadi said through the written statement.

According to him, the two sides emphasized the need to strengthen their collaboration by streamlining ecosystem approaches into Indonesia’s agricultural practices.

"They also placed an emphasis on empowering farmers and encouraging a more efficient market for agricultural products, through better value chains, in an effort to stabilize, and where possible reduce, food prices which would help to address rural poverty," Hendriadi said cited statement of Minister Sulaiman.
