These photos, dating back to the very first days of photography in the late 1800s, up until the 1970s, chart that transformation.

Rome's ancient Colosseum, for example, has attracted much bigger crowds since 1921, when a photo was snapped of the site shows only a scattering of visitors, all very well-dressed.

Another black-and-white image, this time taken in 1887, captures the Eiffel Tower in Paris when it was still only half built.
