Jakarta (B2B) - National flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia, in cooperation with South Sulawesi administration, will open a flight attendant school in Makassar, South Sulawesi, in December.
“We have decided to open a school in Makassar after we secured an agreement with the provincial administration. The administration will provide the building for the flight attendant training center,” Garuda Indonesia learning and development vice president Muhammad Fajar Siddik said Friday.
According to Fajar, the center is expected to provide qualified flight attendants for Garuda Indonesia and its low cost carrier Citilink serving eastern Indonesia routes.
As of today, Garuda Indonesia has trained its flight attendants only in Jakarta. The company has stationed 60 Jakarta-trained flight attendants in Makassar alone, but the number would not be enough to serve all routes in eastern parts of Indonesia.
“Our demand for flight attendants keeps increasing in line with the increasing number of airplanes stationed in Makassar,” said Fajar.
Fajar was optimistic that the school would attract many applicants as the flight attendant position was among the preferred jobs in the company. According to him, every time the company opens up a job vacancy for a flight attendant position, the number of applicants has always been high, reaching 1,000. From these applicants, the company only chooses between 20 and 25 people.
In a bid to further strengthen its foothold in Eastern Indonesia, the airline plans to establish a maintenance facility, cargo business and a cold storage center in Makassar. The company will also build hotels in Makassar; Manado, North Sulawesi; Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi; and Gorontalo.
