Pasca Imunisasi, Bayi Malang Tewas Membiru

Lewoleba (B2B) - A doctor in Lewoleba Regional Hospital in Lembata regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is suspected of committing malpractice killing a four-day old baby after being shot for immunization. Mikael Titus Gie died on Friday (16/11) with his body turning blue.

Mikael was born weighing 3.5 kg on Tuesday (13/11). He suddenly got weak and fainted after being injected for immunization in his left thigh and breastfed by his mother who was given an intravenous feeding to prepare for a sterilization surgery. The poor baby died and his mouth and his body turned blue on Friday (16/11).

The parents, Gerardus Gie (37) and his wife Reideldis Tala (37) could not accept the poor service of the hospital killing their baby.

“My son was alright when he was born, but he got weak after being shot in his left thigh. They said that it was for immunization, and two days later he died,” said Tala.

Tala said that on Tuesday (13/11) at 4 AM local time she gave birth to a 3.5 kg baby. She saw her baby with the help of a midwife in the hospital.

The baby was shot for immunization on his left thigh. The mother was also given intravenous feeding, in preparation for womb sterilization surgery. After getting shot, the baby had a fever. According to the midwife, it might be caused by unsteady flow of breast milk hence he had a fever. The midwife suggested to have canned milk.

Meanwhile Gerardus Gie explained that the midwives did not control his son’s fever. “On that night, there was not any supervision. We were asking them to change the muslin, but we were told to do it on our own,” said Gie angrily.

On Friday morning, at observation hour by midwives, his son was very weak and his body got colder. “In the morning observation at 7, there was a midwife. She was shocked because the baby turned blue. She said that we are stupid parents, we must breastfeed him while sitting. She got panic and carried the baby
away to the maternal room and then to neonatal room while installing a small oxygen tube."

“I and my husband were summoned by the doctor and were told that my son had pneumonia and heart defect whereas in fact he had never been examined before. The doctor asked us to permit intravenous feeding on the baby and the doctor said that otherwise our son would die,” said Tala.

Midwives and the doctor did all efforts including heart pump, but it did not help. The baby died on Friday (16/11) at 12.49 AM.

The family insists on suing the hospital for the carelessness and negligence by midwives and the doctor.
