Bogor, Jabar [B2B] - Presiden Joko Widodo menerima kunjungan Gubernur Jenderal Australia, David Hurley untuk berdiskusi mengenai penguatan hubungan bilateral, terutama melalui peningkatan kontak antarmasyarakat.
“Beliau kan sebagai gubernur jenderal sehingga pada saat pembicaraan bilateral lebih kepada upaya untuk memperkuat people to people contact,” ujar Menteri Luar Negeri Retno Marsudi dalam keterangannya kepada media, usai acara penyambutan di Isana Kepresidenan Bogor, pada Jumat [17/5].
Menurut Menlu, fokus utama adalah memperkuat pengajaran bahasa, dengan Indonesia meningkatkan pengajaran bahasa Inggris, sementara Australia memperkuat pengajaran bahasa Indonesia. Hal ini diharapkan akan menjadi jembatan yang baik untuk mendekatkan hubungan antarmasyarakat kedua negara.
"Kita yakin bahwa bahasa akan menjadi jembatan yang sangat baik bagi upaya kita untuk mendekatkan people to people contact," imbuhnya.
Gubernur Jenderal Australia, yang juga salah satu pendiri Ikatan Alumni Pertahanan Indonesia-Australia, telah aktif dalam berbagai inisiatif seperti pertukaran pemuda dan dialog antaragama. Pertemuan juga menyinggung persiapan dialog antaragama kedua yang akan dilaksanakan di Australia tahun ini.
"Kita sedang mempersiapkan interfaith dialogue yang kedua di Australia pada tahun ini juga dan tadi juga dibahas oleh Bapak Presiden," jelas Menlu.
Selain itu, pertemuan ini juga menekankan pada peringatan 75 tahun hubungan diplomatik Indonesia-Australia dan 50 tahun hubungan ASEAN dengan Australia pada tahun ini. Kedua pemimpin mengharapkan untuk terus memperkuat dan memperdalam hubungan antarwarga kedua negara.

"He is the governor general so during bilateral talks it is more about efforts to strengthen people to people contact," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a statement to the media, after the welcoming ceremony at the Bogor Presidential Palace, on Friday [17/5].
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the main focus is strengthening language teaching, with Indonesia increasing English language teaching, while Australia is strengthening Indonesian language teaching. It is hoped that this will be a good bridge to bring closer relations between the people of the two countries.
"We believe that language will be an excellent bridge for our efforts to bring closer people to people contact," he added.
The Governor General of Australia, who is also one of the founders of the Indonesia-Australia Defense Alumni Association, has been active in various initiatives such as youth exchanges and interfaith dialogue. The meeting also touched on preparations for the second interfaith dialogue to be held in Australia this year.
"We are preparing the second interfaith dialogue in Australia this year and this was also discussed by the President," explained the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Apart from that, this meeting also emphasized the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Australia diplomatic relations and 50 years of ASEAN relations with Australia this year. The two leaders hope to continue to strengthen and deepen relations between the peoples of the two countries.
