FERNANDO ALONSO has been airlifted to hospital after heavily crashing his new McLaren on the final day of F1 testing in Barcelona.
The Spaniard hit the wall on the exit of turn three with just 15 minutes remaining in the morning session, and an ambulance arrived on the scene.
Alonso was taken back to the medical centre where he was said to be 'OK and conscious', but was then transported to a hospital via a helicopter. McLaren said the two-time world champion was undergoing precautionary checks.
'Today at 12:35 CET, while testing at the Circuit de Catalunya (Barcelona), during the fourth and final day of the current test, Fernando Alonso's McLaren-Honda car left the track at Turn Three, causing the right-hand side of his car to strike the wall,' a team statement said.
'Fernando was driven to the circuit's Medical Centre where the circuit's doctors gave him first aid.
'He was conscious and spoke with the doctors.
'However, as per usual procedure in such circumstances, he was then airlifted to hospital where he is undergoing precautionary checks.
'We will issue a further update in due course.'
Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad Tweeted: '(sic) Fernando is OK and conscious. Thank you !'
The 33-year-old had completed 20 laps prior to the accident, and was fifth in the standings.
McLaren missed the opening hours of the test as Honda configured its engine, and Alonso was only scheduled to drive for the morning before handing over to team-mate Jenson Button.
Former world champion Sebastian Vettel told reporters: 'The speed was slow - maybe 150kph.Then he turned right into the wall. It looked strange.'
