GITAR solo pernah menjadi bagian penting dari setiap lagu terbaik tapi menjadi kurang populer dalam musik pop, gitar disukai tidak lebih dari sekadar alat bagi para gitaris untuk memamerkan kepiawaian mereka (istilah teknisnya disebut ´fret-wanking´).
Gitaris hebat butuh lagu bagus, maka dengan pilihan nada yang tepat, gitar solo dalam lagu dapat menjadi - salah satu bagian yang paling mengesankan dan menarik - bagian penting dari lagu yang membuat Anda ingin mendengarnya berulang kali.
Tapi band, musisi dan penulis lagu kerap diingatkan tentang perhatian penikmat musik, membuat penulis lagu sering ditekan untuk menghilangkan melodi gitar karena durasi lagu rata-rata terbatas 3,5 menit ketika diputar di radio.
Tak terhitung jumlah gitar solo yang tidak layak masuk daftar gitar solo terbaik (Queen dan Thin Lizzy layak masuk daftar) sehingga harus dipilih selektif sebagai yang terbaik.

Mungkin ini salah satu solo terkenal dan terbaik yang pernah dan itu fakta. Kabarnya dilakukan melalui dua kali rekaman, gitar solo yang membuat pendengarnya ingin mendengar Beat It berulang kali.

Lagu brutal. Band brutal. Solo brutal. Gitar solo yang meliuk-liuk. Gitaris Dimebag mempengaruhi banyak musisi yang tak terhitung jumlahnya dan pencinta musik rock dengan riff dan caranya memainkan gitar. Dianggap karya Dimebag terbaik dan kehadirannya masih dirindukan hingga saat ini.
8 Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits - Mark Knopfler
Mari kita dengarkan - lagu ini pada dasarnya satu gitar solo panjang. Namun sang guitar hero menempatkan tepat melodi gitar yang meliuk-liuk pada lagu, yang dianggap sebagai epik solo sepanjang masa.

SOLOS were once a staple of any great song but have become less popular in pop music, frowned upon as being nothing more than a tool for a guitarist to show off (the technical term being ‘fret-wanking’).
If it’s appropriate and the song needs it, with the right note selection, a solo within a song can be one of the most memorable and exciting parts – a part that you look forward to hearing time and time again.
But as bands, musicians and songwriters are told that people’s attention spans are waning, songwriters are often pressured into omitting them in order to get a sub-three-and-a-half minute song for the radio.
There are countless solos I’ve had to miss out from this list (Queen and Thin Lizzy could have multiple entries alone) so I’ve had to be ruthless.
In the end, I’ve chosen the solos that have influenced me the most as a guitarist and a songwriter via the hours I spent as a teenager trying to figure out how to play them.
So… let me introduce you (in no particular order…apart from the first one) to my top 19 guitar solos.
1 Beat It – Michael Jackson – Eddie Van Halen
Probably one of the best known solos ever and it was a real game-changer. Reportedly done in two takes, this solo has so much attitude and rips your face off every time.
Wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, when this solo starts, I always have to stop, listen and learn.
2 Dancing In The Moonlight – Thin Lizzy – Scott Gorham
One of the best solos ever, in one of the best songs ever, by the best band to have ever existed.
3 All Right Now – Free – Paul Kossoff
Free were one of the most talented bands ever for their age and it shows in the maturity of their songwriting and Paul’s guitar playing.
4 Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now – Starship – Craig Chaquico
5 Stranger In A Strange Land – Iron Maiden – Adrian Smith
Adrian Smith has long been one of my favourite guitarists and it shows why in this song. He cites Michael Schenker as a hero (also in this list) and it shows here. Smith’s solos are always well thought-out and executed to perfection. An absolute lynchpin to Maiden.
6 You Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC – Angus Young
I often hear people casually describe Angus Young as ‘just a blues guitarist’ but he is so much more than that, as shown by this solo.
This solo just oozes feel and passion and is so much fun to play.
7 I’m Broken – Pantera – Dimebag Darrell
Brutal song. Brutal band. Brutal solo. A real face-melter. Dimebag has influenced countless musicians and music lovers worldwide with his riffs and guitar playing. For me, this is Dimebag at his best and his presence in the music world is still greatly missed to this day.
8 Sultans Of Swing – Dire Straits – Mark Knopfler
Let’s face it – this song is basically one long guitar solo. But a great masterclass in using little licks to great effect in between singing, culminating in one of the most epic solos of all time at the end of the song.
9 I’m Going Home – Ten Years After – Alvin Lee
At the time this song was played at Woodstock, Alvin’s speed of playing must have seemed other-worldly. Still to this day, his playing on this song is ridiculous. He’s often cited as being one of the main influencers of the 80s shredding style.
10 To Be With You – Mr. Big – Paul Gilbert
Paul Gilbert has too many great solos to choose from but this one shows a guy who has real flair and creativity.
11 Too Much Love Will Kill You – Queen – Brian May
Before Brian started to wear oversized sports attire and save badgers, he spent his time creating genius solos for Queen.
Every Brian May solo should be considered a work of art. Because they are.
May has so much class and feel that if you want to be a great guitarist, you should study his guitar playing.
12 Walking By Myself – Gary Moore
What a guitarist Gary Moore was. His solos have so much feel along with so much frenetic energy.
This is one deadly solo.
Prepare to get schooled in attitude, vibrato and insane string bending.
13 Try Me – UFO – Michael Schenker
Schenker is the reason I started to play lead guitar and this song alone taught me so much about emotion, feel, tone and note selection.
14 Highway Star – Deep Purple – Ritchie Blackmore
This solo reflects the fiery character of Mr. Blackmore and you can tell how he ended up influencing a lot of metal guitarists like Yngwie Malmsteen.
Blackmore pushed so many boundaries with his playing at the time and this is a solo that keeps on giving.
15 Crazy – Aerosmith – Joe Perry
Again, this band has so many solos to choose from. But the bends and notes that Perry hits on this song are mindblowing.
16 Live Forever – Oasis – Noel Gallagher
Who doesn’t like a bit of controversy? ‘Noel Gallagher in a best guitar solos list and no Free Bird??’ I hear you cry. Noel has come up with some tasty licks and riffs, none more so than on this song.
A great solo, like many on this list, is great when you can sing them. This is a great example.
17 Get The Funk Out – Extreme – Nuno Bettencourt
Nuno currently plays guitar for Rihanna, which is a far cry from what he played with Extreme.
18 Purple Haze – The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Jimi Hendrix
He was a real pioneer and paved the way for modern rock guitar players.
Every guitarist, whether they know it or not, is in debt to Hendrix in one way or another.
19 Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns N’ Roses – Slash
It has influenced countless guitarists and it’s easy to forget how good something is when a song is overplayed.
