RUSSIAN PRESIDENT Vladimir Putin is cutting his stay at the G20 Summit short after a 'tense' meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron and criticism from other Western leaders regarding Russia's involvement with the Ukraine.

While Vladimir Putin was all smiles as he was welcomed to the 2014 G20 on Saturday afternoon, the Russian President is planning to leave the G20 Summit ahead of schedule, bringing a press conference forward before leaving Australia on Sunday.

The move may have been prompted by stern words from Mr Cameron over Russia's involvement in the embattled nation of the Ukraine, risking relationships with other nations.

'The programme of the second day (Sunday) is changing, it's being cut short,' confirmed a source in the Russian delegation.

The frosty relationship between Russia and other Western nations overshadowed the Summit, with no immediate comment on the decision from Australia or other delegations.

The spokesperson for the Russian president denied that it was criticism from Western leaders which had prompted the move, saying that 'there had been no scandals,' reported Yahoo.

However, it has been a rocky visit for Mr Putin, with the trip going from bad to worse from the moment the Russian President's plane touched down in Australia.

Mr Putin's plane was snubbed at the airport by major political figures, as he was greeted by the Governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey and Assistant Defence Minister Stuart Roberts.

Less than five minutes later Attorney-General George Brandis and Queensland Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney were at Brisbane airport to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and his wife met Chinese President Xi Jinping's aircraft as it landed.

Mr Abbott was cordial when he greeted the Russian Prime Minister at the beginning of Saturday's formalities, but some wondered about a two-fingered hand gesture Mr Putin made during the encounter.

Saturday continued the stroke of misfortune for Mr Putin, with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper reportedly telling the Russian President, 'I guess I'll shake your hand, but I'll only have one thing to say to you - get out of the Ukraine.'

The Telegraph reported that British Prime Minister David Cameron met with the Russian Prime Minister for 50 minutes, during which Mr Cameron told Mr Putin that he was at a 'crossroads' and was risking the nation's relationship with other Western countries.
