IF YOUR BUDGET doesn’t quite stretch to an iPhone 6 or Samsung’s top of the range Galaxy handset, you might consider the OnePlus 2.
The smartphone costs less than half the price of an iPhone 6, but boasts a powerful camera, high resolution screen and a fingerprint sensor.
Made by a Chinese start-up, the 5.5-inch model is the follow-up to last year’s popular OnePlus One – but you have to be invited to buy one.
The OnePlus 2 handset will cost from £239 in the UK when it goes on sale in August.
It runs Android Lollipop and features a 5.5-inch, 1080p screen that ‘outperforms in direct sunlight with 178 degrees of crystal clear viewing angles’ as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.
It comes with with 16GB of storage with 3GB of RAM, or 64GB of storage with 4GB of RAM.
One of the phone’s selling points is its 13-megapixel camera with image stabilisation, a laser focusing system and two-tone flash as well as a 5 megapixel front-facing camera for selfies.
Like the iPhone, the handset has a fingerprint sensor so users can lock and unlock their phone ‘in less than half a second’ without having to remember a password.
OnePlus has made its own skin for Android, called OxygenOS, which allows people to use gestures to access features, such as tapping the screen to wake it and drawing a circle to activate the camera.
A feature called the ‘shelf’ collects a user’s most-used apps and contacts together in one place, as well as Google Now, which they can see simply by swiping left.
The phone is made from better quality materials than its predecessor, with an aluminium frame and stainless steel accents and textured plastic, kevlar or wooden back covers made from bamboo, black apricot and rosewood.
‘At just 175 grams, the OnePlus 2 is easy and natural to hold,’ the company says.
It has a USB-C port on the bottom, which is the newest USB standard that is expected to be adopted by multiple smartphone makers.
The 64GB will be available for pre-order from August 11 in the UK, with a price of £289, while the smaller 16GB version will cost £239 and be available later this year.
Rob Kerr, mobiles expert at uSwitch.com, told MailOnine: ‘Its features rival today's current flagship phones, so the OnePlus 2 is likely to be a threat to the current spate of top-tier mobiles.
‘…At less than half the cost of Samsung's flagship S6 handset, it'll be looking to capture the mass market where decisions are based on price.
